VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Vigo County Clerk’s Office is showcasing new voting equipment, allowing Vigo County residents to test out the new systems at the Vigo County Fair, that clerks say will possibly speed up the process and be more efficient.
After reviewing national, primary and mock elections over the years, the Vigo County decided to make a change. Vigo County Clerk Brad Newman says it’s in an effort to make the voting process smoother and faster.
“Wanted to improve the process so we have everything down here, Newman said. “Everything from the new e-poll book to the new freedom votes. They’ve already been certified through the state. They’re ready to go as soon as we start having election we’re going to start using them.”
In addition to making improvements to the voter experience Newman says he believes the new equipment is more efficient.
“Just schematics of how we set up each one of the polling location and so what we did was once we starting looking at that we starting saying how can we improve this,” Newman said. “We’re not reinventing the wheel, we’re just making it smoother. How can we do this where it’s the most efficient to get somebody from start to finish with the best results.”
In order to offset the cost of the new equipment the clerk’s office sold their old voting machines to another county. Newman says he hopes during their time at the fair that voters will be able to get a hands-on experience with the new system.
“Your young voter to your oldest voter and how does that accommodate them and that’s another reason we landed on these machines,” Newman said. “This Freedom Vote machine, I don’t know why everyone else in the country isn’t using it.”
The clerk’s office says the new voting machines and polling system will be implemented in the next election.
