TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — As we begin to honor Black History Month, we want to show you how two businesses right here at home are bringing a positive impact to you.
Through different areas of work, two Black-owned businesses in Terre Haute, Ind. are doing their part in bringing something different to the community that can help your mind, body and soul.
Wellness Box Inc.
LT Thompson started Wellness Box Inc. 5 years ago with the goal of bringing more than just your typical gym to anyone looking to kick off their health journey.
“We focus on the assessment side, so we focus on body composition assessment using a medical grade device, we focus on metabolism testing using a clinical grade device that Olympians use,” Thompson said.
Thompson was previously a football player for Indiana State University, and has a Bachelor’s degree in exercise science.
He said when you take care of your body and are conscious of the things that go into it, it’s likely to fuel your mind, body, and soul.
“I’m invested in the community,” Thompson said. “I’ve been apart of the Terre Haute community since 2002 and I wanted to provide the resources that aren’t typically available in a smaller population such as Terre Haute, Indiana.”
Thompson said he hopes that by giving people access to more personalized, one on one training, that they will have easier access to their fitness goals.
“I’m so passionate and we’re so passionate about health and wellness because of past family experiences,” he said. “Particularly you know, my dad struggled with Type 2 diabetes and different things like that, that plays a major part in the quality of life.”
Thompson said being a small business owner has not been easy, but he hopes to continue to make a positive impact, right here at home.
“As a small business owner, especially a black small business owner, it’s really hard to compete with some of the box gyms, the bigger gyms here in town,” Thompson said.

Uncle Jr’s BBQ
Yousif Raheem is one of the owners of Uncle JR’s BBQ in Terre Haute. He opened the restaurant of October of 2021, after opening Mama D’s in 2020.
“We like to serve good food and you know, see people smile when they eat our food and tell us how good it is and how good their experience was when they came to the restaurant,” Raheem said.
Raheem runs the restaurant with almost all of his family members. He said he opened up Uncle Jr’s to give community members more of a “family-oriented” feel, which he thinks can be hard to find.
“But bringing more businesses like this you know, it kind of makes it easier when you’re running things with people that you know and people that you deal with everyday versus being like a big chain,” Raheem said.
Raheem said he is thankful to be a black business owner in the community, and for the love and support he has received.
“I’m so thankful to be recognized as a black-owned business but at the same time, I do this for everybody,” he said. “I want everybody to be able to enjoy what I do.”
Raheem said he hopes to be able to contribute to the wellness of the mind, body and soul in the Terre Haute community.
