TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A garage fire started by a wood burner inside the garage was exacerbated by Thursday afternoon’s high winds, which blew burning leaves toward five other residences in northeast Terre Haute, Seelyville Deputy fire chief John Hendricks reported this evening.
Seelyville and Terre Haute fire squads responded to the call on the 8100 block of E. Gospel Grove Ave. at approximately 3:30 p.m. The resident at the address was in his home — which was separate from the garage — at the time of the fire. The garage was a total loss, Hendricks said, but the house sustained no substantial damage. No injuries were reported.
Burning leaves kicked up by winds caught surrounding trees on fire, and blew onto other lawns of five other homes. One neighbor’s house was slightly damaged, but there was no severe damage to the others. Firefighters had the situation under control, but were still battling hotspots in the area at 7 p.m.
