TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– Katherine Hamilton opened the Hamilton Mental Health center in Terre Haute in 1971.
She was inspired to help other battling mental illness after witnessing her sister go through years of dealing with mental illness.
Since it’s founding, the Hamilton Center now provides resources in Vigo, Clay, Greene, Owen, Putnam, Hendricks, Sullivan, Parke and Vermillion counties.
In honor of their 50th anniversary, the organization plans to give back to the community by providing free suicide prevention trainings.
Melvin Burks, Hamilton Center CEO, said he want’s the community to know they’re always here for support.
“We know the suicide rate has gone up. We want people to understand, we hear you. We hear those who are struggling and have challenges with this life to know they are not alone. Hamilton Center is just around the corner,” he said.
Burks hopes to expand their services to communities in neighboring states in the next few years.
