Fatal fire in Charleston, IL believed to be accidental

CHARLESTON, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — Officials believe a fatal fire in Charleston, Illinois Monday morning was accidental.

The Charleston Fire Department was dispatched around 6:30 a.m. to the fire at 411 N. 4th Street.

Upon arrival, firefighters were able to confirm one occupant of the home was able to escape while another was reportedly trapped inside.

According to the fire department, crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire. They discovered the person inside was deceased.

The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of the family.

While authorities believe the fire was accidental, it is still currently under investigation by the Illinois Fire Marshal’s Office and Coles County Coroner’s Office.
