Terre Haute, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Jennifer Long’s dad, step-mom and family friend wore t-shirts with her picture as they watched her killer be put to death.
Victim’s dad, William Long said, “I’ve been dreaming about this for 17 years. Long wait. Long wait for something you think about everyday.”
Wesley Ira Purkey was convicted of raping murdering and dismembering the 16-year-old.
As he lay strapped to a gurney at the federal prison in Terre Haute with what appeared to be plastic IV tubes attached to his body.
He said he deeply regretted the pain and suffering he caused Long’s family.
But her family felt Purkey was insincere.
Olivia Long said, “He’s a very manipulative individual.”
The Long’s would like someone to evaluate the appeals process.
Olivia Long said, “It just took way to long. All these appeals. Some of them put through several time.”
Among the last minute appeals, Purkey’s lawyers claimed he suffered from dementia and would not know why he was being put to death.
Again, something long’s family does not believe.
According to Olivia Long, “There’s obviously nothing wrong with him mentally because he remembered Jennifer’s name to apologize to us.”
During his final statement Purkey claimed his death or what he called his quote.. “sanitized murder” did not serve a purpose.
While the Longs we’re glad to see the execution take place, Jennifer’s dad says he’ll never have closure.
William Long said, “Every day, everyday for the rest of my life I will think of it. I will remember it and it’s not something any parent should have to live through.”
Purkey also apologized to his daughter for the pain he caused her.
Purkey was also convicted in a state court of murdering an 80-year-old woman by using a claw hammer.
Another execution is set for Friday afternoon.
