VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – In honor of Black History Month, Sarah Scott Middle School in Vigo County held a presentation Thursday called the Weight of Racism.
Nichelle Campbell-Miller, a social worker at Sarah Scott, says the goal of the presentation is to teach students about activism and standing against racism.
The presentation included a board displaying racist slurs and insults. One of the presenters held a stack of bricks that grew as each word was displayed on the board, symbolizing the weight of racism.
Campbell-Miller says learning experiences like this help students think outside the box.
“Everyone claims the kids are the future, and they are, and so what we want to make sure is that we’re preparing them, and as educators that’s our job. It’s to prepare our kids for the future and not everyone learns the best by just sitting in a chair, and so the more hands-on experience they get, the better,” says Campbell-Miller.
Campbell-Miller says this is the third year they’ve put on a Black History Month experience.
