VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — New funding is expected to help identify and clean up contaminated sites in Vermillion County.

Thrive West Central announced that they received a $400,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Community-Wide Brownfields Assessment Grant program. The group is acting on behalf of the Vermillion County Redevelopment Commission.

The funding will be used to identify and address contamination at brownfield sites so that those properties can be redeveloped.

Brownfields are defined as “abandoned, idled, or underused industrial and commercial properties where reuse or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived contamination.”

VCRC is eager to involve the community in this effort. Public input is encouraged, and the Commission will consider potential reuses for these sites. Contact Oren (Doc) Sutherlin with your thoughts and ideas.
