Dozens gather in protest of new Illinois school mask mandate

PARIS, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) – Dozens gathered at the Edgar County Courthouse in Paris to protest new legislation handed down by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.

Illinois schools must require that students wear masks at school. This reverses a previous decision of allowing school boards to make that decision.

Brooke Bishop organized the protest and said that she would like for each school to have the power to make its own decision.

“I’m not discounting the virus or the parents’ right to make the decision for wearing the facial coverings,” Bishop said. “Today was simply about trying to get the local school boards empowered to make the decisions.”

Bishop explained that she feels as if the state government is ignoring the pleas of parents regarding these mandates.

“As a parent, I feel more loss of freedoms everyday,” Bishop said. “We’re trying to fight for those freedoms.”

According to Dr. Jeremy Larson, Superintendent for Paris 95 schools, the district plans to follow the guidelines given by the state.
