VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The removal of the historic Markle Mill Dam began Monday morning.

The structure was built over 200 years ago, earlier this year county officials voted to remove it citing its deteriorating condition and safety concerns.

Rosedale Road, which runs along an edge of the park was shut down Monday morning from 8 a.m. until noon to allow locals room to get final pictures of the dam as crews began demolition.

The removal comes as the county is also pursuing several upgrades at the park– adding new equipment, removing trees, and renovating the parking lot.

WTWO’s David Shepherd is in attendance and will have more regarding the removal, what locals are saying, and what the next steps will be following demolition tonight on WAWV News at 5 and WTWO News at 6.
