‘Environmental conditions’ lead to death of Vermillion County woman

Local News

HILLSDALE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)- Vermillion County authorities are investigating a death after a body was discovered in an abandoned residence earlier this month.

Deputies discovered the body of 69-year-old Nancy C. Helms on Jan. 5 after being called to the east side of the railroad track near CR 400 East in Hillsdale.

Vermillion County Sheriff Mike Phelps said Helms lived in the abandoned residence by choice for years. A local resident discovered the body while taking food to Helms.

The Vermillion County Coroner’s Office determined the cause of death to be from environmental conditions. Foul play was ruled out.
