VERMILION COUNTY, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Danville man has died after his motorcycle hit a pothole and lost control on Interstate 74 in Vermilion County.
According to Illinois State Police, the crash occurred at 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 6 at the 202 mile marker near Oakwood.
Investigating police found that Jacob Lovell, 24, of Danville, had been riding his motorcycle eastbound on I-74 when the bike struck a pothole in the right lane, lost control and ejected Lovell. A Ford Escape had been driving in the right lane behind the motorcycle with a third vehicle in between the two.
The third vehicle swerved to avoid striking the motorcycle but the Escape was unable to do so and struck the motorcycle.
Lovell was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The driver of the Escape was uninjured.
The crash and investigation caused the closure of I-74 for approximately 2 hours.
