VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The first ever gravel triathlon in Indiana took place at Griffin Bike Park on Saturday.

Do Indiana Offroad, or D.IN.O, hosted the races, which brought dozens of runners into the community. Saturday, they the group held a 10k run, as well as the triathlon. The triathlon consisted of swimming or kayaking, a gravel road bike ride, and a trail 5k to end it.

Brian Holzhausen is the owner of D.IN.O. and he explains why this event is one of a kind in this area.

“It’s the first gravel triathlon in Indiana. Gravel cycling has become very popular has become over the last few years. Cyclist have been riding more on gravel than pavement. We decided to create a gravel triathlon that combines swimming or kayaking along with a gravel road bike ride and a trail run to finish it up,” he said.

Holzhausen bought this company in 2001. The reason for this is his love for the fitness and cycling world. He wanted to gain traction on the adventure sports realm more than anything.

“I feel like adventure sports in this area aren’t really promoted as much as they should be. It’s a great way to get outside, challenge yourself, and keep yourself in the best shape you can be in.”

D.IN.O. will also be holding a mountain bike race tomorrow morning at 8am at Griffen Bike Park.
