West Terre Haute garage apartment destroyed in Friday fire

Local News

WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — An apartment above a garage in West Terre Haute was destroyed Friday in a fire.

According to Assistant Chief Jared Daugherty of the Sugar Creek Fire Department, no one was home when the fire started around noontime in the 300 block of South 5th Street.

Daugherty said the renter went to get food, and when he came home and opened the door, he discovered the fire. The renter immediately went to the main house to call for help.

By the time they called 911 and came back outside, “it was too far gone,” Daugherty noted.

Black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from the WTWO weather camera.

The apartment received extensive damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
