TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A new music venue could be coming to Terre Haute this summer.
Vigo County Commissioners Tuesday approved a lease agreement with Tim Drake to establish the venue at the former International Paper building on Prairieton Road across from the Aquatic Center.
Drake is currently co-owner of Show-Me’s in Terre Haute. He said they have been working on this new venture for several years, starting when the former paper company site went on the market.
“We found this about five or six years ago,” he said, “and we’ve been after it ever since. We’ve been waiting our turn. And just recently, today, we actually get a true opportunity to get out there and do something.”
Drake noted this planned establishment is something the city could benefit from.
“We’re really wanting to build this to where the community can use it. To where it’s not just solely centered around music, but whether it’s festivals, beer festivals, food festival,” he said. “We’ve got some tremendous breweries and wineries here in this town. I think we’ll be a place to where we can handle large numbers of people to kind of showcase what Terre Haute has to offer.”
Residents said a music venue would be a welcome addition to the community.
“It would encourage people to stay here, I think,” said Earlene Owens. “As long as you attracted some really nice good music.”
Drake hopes to begin construction within the next few months, with the first concert to be held in June or July.
“I think we’ll start a little small and grow it out this year. I’d like to see us get into a 4,000 to 6,000-person concert and more of a festival-style setting into this year. I’d be happy if we can get that done.”
