Convention Center work begins Wednesday in downtown Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Hilton Garden Inn parking lot in downtown Terre Haute is under construction for the Convention Center.

You can see fencing was placed around the lot Wednesday, that’s so Thursday, utility work can begin.
Mayor Duke Bennett says the project will be a big economic boom for Terre Haute.

The mayor says the county’s food and beverage tax lost some revenue the past couple of months due to the pandemic. The tax was created to support the Convention Center project. Mayor Bennett says it has generated enough revenue from previous months.

“It’s kind of some light at the end of the tunnel here, because we believe this is going to be extremely successful, it will be open in a couple of years here. And so we’ll be able to book things down the road, it’s going to help our downtown businesses. It’s going to help our entire community,” Bennett said.

The mayor also says plans for the Vigo County Capital Improvement Board to purchase the school administration property on Wabash will be finalized next week. That property would be used for additional parking.
