TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Members of the community gathered Thursday evening to walk one mile down Wabash Avenue in remembrance of fallen Terre Haute Police Officer, Detective Greg Ferency.
The event was inspired by a boy in Florida who runs one mile for every fallen officer in the United States. His mother posted on Facebook that he ran one mile on Thursday in honor of Detective Ferency.
That’s when event organizer Bryttany Dunkley had the idea to do the same thing in Terre Haute. Detective Ferency’s death had an impact on her specifically due to her family ties with law enforcement.
“My dad is the sheriff here in Vigo County and my brother is on the police department here. So it kind of hits home a little harder to me and it brings back all these memories from the other officers in the past ten years. So it’s like we’re doing it all over again,” Dunkley said.
Dunkley hopes the event shows family of law enforcement how much the community supports them.
