TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WAWV/WTWO) – Terre Haute Lodge No.19 along with masonic and community organizations have prepared for Memorial Day.

Organizations gathered at the Soldiers & Sailors Circle located at the Highland Lawn Cemetery to clean veteran’s headstones before Memorial Day.

Over 200 headstones were cleaned in compliance with the standards set forth by the U.S. Department of Veteran`s Affairs National Cemetery Administration.

The Terre Haute Fire Department lent the use of a tanker truck for cleaning and the lodge provided the rest of the cleaning supplies.

Terre Haute Lodge No.19 Veteran David Peter said it’s important to continue to show gratitude to those who have sacrificed their lives after they have passed.

“The simple act of cleaning a headstone and removing the dirt, lichen, and moss acknowledges their service and says thank you,” Peter said.

Lodge No.19 has plans to coordinate more beatification efforts in the near future.
