VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Vigo County’s Solid Waste Management District helped make the environment and streets safer Saturday during its annual ‘Tox Away event’ which allowed residents to safely dispose of hazardous chemicals and tires.
New this year, Saturday’s event was set up in zones which helped with traffic control and ensured that drivers knew exactly which way to go.
Each item had its own section, including electronics and appliances, that would other wise be left on the street or in alleys.
Over 450 vehicles drove through the line and participated in the event.
“This allows people at no cost to them, to bring items so that our landfill isn’t filled up with stuff,” executive director for the Vigo County Solid Waste Management Karrum Nasser said. “It also allows our water ways to remain clean without having dangerous chemicals being dumped in yards, on the side of the road.”
The waste department had help from other agencies and organizations that helped make the day of success.
