CHARLESTON, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV)– One person was rescued during a fire early Sunday morning in Charleston.

According to a release from Charleston Fire Chief Steve Bennett, crews responded to calls of a structure fire at 714 S. 9th St. just after 1 a.m. Firefighters encountered flames on the stairwell, and had to rescue one resident from the second floor via ladder. They were taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

There was no other people in the building. Crews battled the fire for nearly five hours, and damage from the flames was limited to just the stairway, with some smoke damage on the second floor. Charleston Fire, along with the Mattoon Fire Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office are continuing to investigate the cause of the incident.
