CHARLESTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Charleston Fire Department responded to a six-unit apartment fire on Wednesday morning.

According to Charleston Fire Department Chief Steve Bennett, the call came in around 7:20 a.m. near the 900 block of Oakcrest Drive. When crews arrived, they found the building had smoke coming from the roof, and visible flames running up the exterior.

Bennett added that crews focused on the fire in specific apartments and were able to keep it from spreading into other areas of the building. Crews worked the scene until around 10:37 a.m. and noted that no one was home during the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

The fire is suspected to have originated in the floor joists of the second floor. Multiple apartments suffered fire and smoke damage, and 5 people will be temporarily displaced.

Bennett said the fire is currently under investigation by the Charleston Fire Department and the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
