VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Vigo County Health Department is once again asking residents to do their part to limit mosquito breeding opportunities by disposing of their old tires.
While most companies that offer tire disposal charge a fee, this yearly event allows residents of the county to dispose of up to 10 tires for free.
“Tires are prime breeding grounds for mosquitos which carry the West Nile Virus. Proper disposal of tires will reduce the spread of the virus in Vigo and other surrounding counties,” a Health Department flyer reads.
Tires to be disposed of must be without rims, and can only come from Vigo County residents. Businesses, tire retailers, salvage yards, mechanic shops, and trucking companies will not qualify for amnesty and will receive a fee should they choose to dispose of tires through the program.
Proof of Vigo County residency will be required, and drop-offs of tires is by appointment only. The amnesty program will run from April 3 through May 5, Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Semi-tires, tractor tires, and other large tires must have pre-authorization to be dropped off.
Drop off’s will occur by appointment at the Vigo County Health Department Vector Control office located at 1241 7th Avenue.
For questions, pre-approval questions or to schedule your drop-off appointment call the Vector Control office at 812-234-9181.
