TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Second grade students at Rio Grande Elementary got together Tuesday morning to throw the school’s first ever “Balloons Over Rio” event.

The students paraded through the halls of the school for parents, staff and the other students, showing off the colorful and creative balloons they had made.

The balloons ranged from the students’ favorite characters from movies, Pokémon and their favorite animals, to even hotdogs and ice cream.

Students said they got the idea after reading “Balloons Over Brooklyn” as a class. The book is a children’s book that tells the story of the creation of the Macy’s Parade.
