TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Basketball fans gathered this week at Terre Haute South High School for the annual First Financial Wabash Valley Classic basketball tournament.

The four day long tournament began Monday and has hosted 16 high school teams from all over the Wabash Valley.

This event was the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic that fans were allowed to attend the event at 100% capacity.

“I didn’t get to come last year, and I missed it. I’m glad to be back because high school basketball is my favorite sport,” attendee Daryl Haltom said.

While the event came with it’s fair share of alley oops and assists, fans came for more than just the games. The event also provided a return to a sense of normalcy for the community.

“I think everybody’s glad just because like no one could come last year. I think everybody is super excited for this year,” student Ellis Dalton said.

“Because of COVID, we weren’t able to do it last year, and we’re very thankful and appreciative to be able to be back here again this year,” fan Tony Tanoos said.

The First Financial Wabash Valley Classic will conclude on Thursday, Dec. 30.
