HYMERA, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — After 40 years on the job, one Hymera-Jackson Township Volunteer firefighter went on his last fire call Tuesday.
Captain Estel Shidler said he will never forget his first and last fires.
Something Shidler said he will always take with him is serving with his brother for 23 years before he died three years ago. He also said he has contemplated retirement for the last three years.
“The memories are astronomical,” Shidler said. “The brotherhood and being with them is just a great memory that I will cherish for the rest of my life.”
Though he will no longer fight fires, Shidler will continue as a secretary at Hymera. He will also stay as chaplain for the Sullivan County Fire Department.
