VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A 3-vehicle wreck involving a semi led to a lane shutdown for some time on southbound SR 63 in northern Vigo County.
According to Indiana State Police, the crash occurred on the Wabash River Bridge on SR 63 South near Barnhart Road Tuesday morning. Two passenger vehicles and a semi-truck hauling asphalt were involved.
Sgt. Matt Ames said the cause of the crash was due to icy road conditions causing vehicles to lose control. The damage caused a leak in the fuel tank for the semi, a private contracted hazmat crew was brought in to cleanup the spill.
One lane remained passable along the road, but drivers were asked to avoid the area if possible. As of 11:45 a.m. ISP reports the road has been reopened.
Indiana State Police remind drivers as the temperatures begin to drop, bridges will be the first to freeze up, so slow down and be cautious as you drive.
