DNR identifies man who died in an off road vehicle crash in Hymera

HYMERA, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – One person died Saturday evening in Hymera, Ind. after an off road vehicle accident, According to Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources released the man’s identity Tuesday morning.

At approximately 4:47 p.m., ­­­­­­conservation officers with Indiana DNR were sent to a property near the 600 block of Orchard Street in Hymera, Ind. for a possible fatal ORV accident.

Upon arrival, responders found out that Billy Joe Alumbaugh, 53, of Shelburn, Ind. had failed to return home when expected and that concerned family members had set out to find him. 

While searching the area, family members found Alumbaugh and his amphibious ORV in Busseron Creek. Alumbaugh was not responding to family and was pinned under a fallen tree, still on top of his ORV.

Alumbaugh was pronounced dead on the scene. The investigation, according to a news release from DNR, determined the death was accidental, and no foul play is suspected.
