Local News

VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A pickup truck driver failed to yield the right of way to a semi and was hit by it Friday afternoon, sending the pickup driver to the hospital, Vermillion County Sheriff Mike Phelps reported.

According to witnesses, at approximately 3:35 p.m. a 1996 Ford F150 driven by Austin Elkins, 18, of Clinton, was south bound on State Road 63 and attempted to make a left turn onto 2nd Street, failing to yield the right of way to the semi. The semi, driven by Douglas Pofahl, 42, of Valparaiso, was unable to avoid striking Elkins’ vehicle in the passenger side. The collision forced the pickup across the grass median and both south bound lanes of State Road 63, where it came to a rest in the ditch.

Elkins was transported to Union Hospital in Terre Haute. Pofhal was uninjured.
