Local events to honor the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks

WABASH VALLEY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — As the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaches, many local organizations and advocacy groups are planning memorial and remembrance events throughout the Wabash Valley.

A full list of the events can be found below:

  • “Remembering 9/11 from 8:46 AM to the Present”
    • What: Historical presentation and speaker event
    • Where: Red Skelton Performing Arts Center or on Zoom
    • When: Friday, Sept. 10 at 11 a.m.
    • Who: Vincennes University
    • Cost: Free
  • 9/11 Memorial Remembrance Ride
    • What: A vehicle motorcade from different parts of the state ending at the 9/11 memorial in Indianapolis
    • Where: There are multiple starting locations listed here, including Valparaiso, West Lafayette, Gas City and Spencer
    • When: Saturday, Sept. 11 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • Who: American Legion
    • Cost: $35
  • WVUB 9/11 20th anniversary program
    • What: Special radio program
    • Where: 91.1 FM or online at wvub.org
    • When: Saturday, Sept. 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
    • Who: Vincennes student radio
  • Indiana 9/11 Memorial Expansion Announcement
    • What: A check presentation to expand the Indiana 9/11 memorial and a speech from Gov. Eric Holcomb
    • Where: 421 W Ohio St., Indianapolis, IN 46202
    • When: Saturday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m.
    • Who: The Indiana 9/11 Memorial Committee
    • Cost: Free, although donations are accepted
  • September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World
    • What: An educational exhibition that presents the history of 9/11
    • Where: Westminster Village in Terre Haute or over Zoom
    • When: Saturday, Sept. 11 at 10:15 a.m.
    • Who: Westminster Village
    • Cost: Free
  • Owen County Soldier Memorial
    • What: A remembrance event for Brett Woods, an Owen County man killed while serving in Afghanistan 10 years ago
    • Where: Owen County Courthouse in Spencer
    • When: Saturday, Sept. 11 at 11 a.m.
  • THFD Remembrance Event
    • What: Private remembrance ceremony for all on-duty and off-duty fire department personnel
    • Where: Terre Haute Fire Department Training Center
    • When: Saturday, Sept. 11 at 12:30 p.m.
    • Who: City of Terre Haute
    • Cost: Free, although only fire department personnel are allowed to attend
  • 9/11 Patriot Day Races
    • What: Three running races (2.977 mile race, 9.11 K race, 9.11 mile race)
    • Where: 500 S. Fruitridge Ave., Terre Haute, IN 47803
    • When: Saturday, Sept. 11
    • Who: Wabash Valley Road Runners
    • Cost: $20-$30 to participate
