Lewis man arrested in Sullivan County after police pursuit

HYMERA, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Sullivan county authorities arrested a man from Lewis on drug related charges Wednesday.

According to Sullivan County sheriff Clark Cottom, around 12:20 p.m. authorities pursued a Ford pickup truck with no license plate on Jackson Street in Hymera. The driver accelerated to a high speed before turning onto Jefferson Street. The driver reached over 60 mph before pulling into a nearby yard.

Authorities identified the driver as Dereck Mellinger,43, of Lewis.

Further investigation into the vehicle revealed methamphetamine inside a cup, inside the vehicle’s console.

Mellinger is charged with Resisting Law Enforcement with a motor vehicle, a level 6 felony and Possession of Methamphetamine, a level 5 felony.

His bond is $23,000, with 10% allowed at the Sullivan County Jail.
