Suspect in West Terre Haute standoff charged with rape, criminal confinement

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A suspect in a Tuesday standoff in West Terre Haute is facing several charges including rape and criminal confinement.

Vigo County sheriff’s deputies and area police responded to a home in West Terre Haute for a report of an assault.

Deputies also had a report that the assault suspect, identified as Edward Wilson, had been injured.

Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse said Wilson moved to another home near Smith Place in West Terre Haute. When deputies arrived, Wilson refused to leave the home. The Special Response Team also assisted.

Plasse said Wilson hid from deputies and also had an acquaintance who lived at the home on Smith Place help hide his vehicle in the garage

After sending in a robot to evaluate the situation, Wilson informed deputies that he needed help getting out of the home. He was then taken into custody and treated for non-life threatening wounds.

Wilson was later booked into the Vigo County Jail on charges of rape, sexual battery, intimidation, criminal confinement, domestic battery with serious bodily injury, interfering with the reporting of a crime and dealing and possession of marijuana. He is being held without bond.

The assault victim is female and is also in hospital care being treated for her injuries.

Sheriff Plasse said he does not anticipate any charges for acquaintances of the suspect who helped him hide because they were cooperative with deputies.
