ISU Athletics unveils vision for new sports district

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Leaders at Indiana State University are ready to take their campus athletics to the next level.

“We really believed it was time to say, here’s what could be. Here’s what we would dream to have at Indiana State if we could have it,” explained ISU President Dr. Deborah Curtis. “Because then you can start an action toward making things happen.”

ISU officials want to bring state-of-the-art athletic buildings to their student athletes.

Their vision includes an on-campus football stadium.

“Just bringing that whole communal feeling of having an on-campus football stadium for alumni, for events,” explained ISU Director of Athletics Sherard Clinkscales.

A baseball and softball field combination.

“The softball field would move over next to baseball,” said Clinkscales. “And they would take the existing building and add on to it to add more space for softball, for baseball, and then add a deck and suites for different things.”

And a practice facility for basketball, which is currently sharing space in the campus arena with volleyball and intramural sports.

“To be able to have something like that for mens/womens basketball, I mean that would be outstanding. That’s a luxury that’d we’d like to have,” Clinkscales explained. “Especially with it being one of our biggest revenue sports, we’d like to have something like that.”

Officials believe the construction of these facilities would increase the value of campus and give Sycamore Athletics a recruitment edge.

“It’s a game changer. To be able to have facilities that we envision like this, it helps us retain the coaches that we have,” said Clinkscale. “And then if we happen to lose them it helps us continue to get good coaches coming in because they know that we can be competitive.”

As of right now the Sycamore Sports District is only a vision and there is no timeline for when the project could begin.

Officials explained the funding for the district will depend on fundraising and donations.
