ISTEP can be a stressful time for students. They’re in constant test-taking mode with the added pressure of having their scores compared to their peers.
And they’re not wrong.
In fact, the Indiana Department of Education encourages all schools to utilize ISTEP for looking at data. That’s something Vigo County Schools use to their advantage.
By looking at scores and data gathered from ISTEP, teachers are able to target specific areas their students may be struggling with.
John Newport, Curriculum Coordinator at Vigo County Schools, says they especially try to keep the atmosphere calm during these tests.
“Some students can get very stressed out over a test that’s being made a big deal across the entire state,” says Newport, “so we really try to keep it as low-key as possible, because we want them to perform their best in normal situations.”
Newport says ISTEP prep at Vigo schools doesn’t just start a week or two before testing. Teachers incorporate ISTEP results with their pacing guides, so that problem areas can be improved throughout the regular school year.
