Inmate serving sentence for 1998 murder of local woman has died

A man who pleaded guilty to killing a local woman in 1998 has died.

The Indiana Department of Corrections confirms that 39-year-old Clinton Mackey died on August 10th. An autopsy shows the cause of death as asphyxia due to hanging and the manner of death as suicide.

He was serving a prison sentence at the New Castle Correctional Facility for the 1998 murder of 19-year-old Erika Case.

Case was found stabbed to death in a rural West Terre Haute home where she was house sitting.

After more than a decade of no answers, TNT’s Cold Case and the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office re-opened the investigation and zeroed in on Mackey.

In 2015, Mackey pleaded guilty to the murder and was sentenced to 40 years for voluntary manslaughter.
