INDIANAPOLIS — Two teens face charges after state police say they lead troopers on a chase in a stolen vehicle with multiple weapons inside.

The Indiana State Police said the chase started after a pair of Indiana State Police troopers, assigned two-to-a-car as part of a special enforcement unit, stopped what they believed to be a stolen black Hyundai, a blanket flapping through a busted side window, near 43rd Street and Shadeland Avenue Tuesday morning.

As the troopers approached the car, the driver took off, leading troopers on a chase on city streets before getting on I-465 southbound. The driver tried to exit at the Brookeville Road exit but lost control.

The chase ended with a crash as the stolen vehicle became airborne and landed in a ditch. Two teenagers bailed out, leapt over a fence ran away while an ISP helicopter kept watch from above.

”At the end of this, the person running, the male, the driver, the seventeen-year-old, he simply just stopped and lay down on the ground and wait for troopers to arrive,” said ISP Sgt. John Perrine.

The passenger, a 14-year-old runaway, also surrendered.

Back in the wrecked stolen car, troopers discovered a motive for the teens to flee.

State police say inside the vehicle, troopers found a loaded revolver was found with the hammer cocked laying on the back floorboard. Also in the vehicle were a loaded shotgun under the driver’s seat, a backpack containing several types of ammunition, four more firearms and a projectile launcher that can attach to a rifle.

”Its certainly concerning when we find this type of behavior, this type of weaponry, any type of weaponry, in the hands of teenagers,” said Perrine. ”The car was stolen out of Indianapolis, the guns are still being processed and analyzed to determine if they were stolen, where they were stolen from, when they were stolen, if that’s the case.”

The 17-year-old driver was preliminarily charged with auto theft, possession of stolen property, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, resisting law enforcement and minor in possession of a firearm.

The 14-year-old passenger was recently reported as a runaway. They were preliminarily charged with resisting law enforcement.

ISP’s All Crimes Policing Squad has patrolled the eastside of Indianapolis since the start of the year as State Police lend a hand to IMPD.

”It consists of six troopers and a supervisor and their job is to take analytical data and saturate and target high crime areas, looking for specific violations and the goal of this squad is to assist our partners at IMPD with mitigating the crime, the gun crime, the drug crime, things like that,” said Perrine.

The older driver could find himself waived over to Superior Court to be tried as an adult.
