Indiana is currently in critical need of all blood types.
And if people don’t start donating some suppliers will run out in the next 24 hours.
The Indiana Blood Center reports they are in a critical need for all blood types.
As of this morning they had very few units of O- left, a universal blood type that gets used often.
And, there is less than a one day supply of all blood types.
In the two hours that I was there talking to officials and donating blood myself, no one else even walked in the doors.
They say that about once a year they hit a critical need for blood, and it is usually during the summer.
If the donations don’t pick up soon it could have serious repercussions.
“With having a less than one day supply i can tell you we have about 510 red cells, which is not enough. Not enough for our hospitals, and obviously not enough for the patients who need it,” said Amy Rose, Indiana Blood Center.
If you are eligible to donate blood you still have time.
The Terre Haute Indiana Blood Center is open until 7 on Thursday, Friday from 7-2, and Saturday from 6-2.
You do not have to have an appointment for a simple blood donation.
