Increased coronavirus testing impacts Vigo Co. confirmed cases

VIGO Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– Coronavirus testing in Vigo Co. has become more widespread leading to an increased number of confirmed cases.

Joni Wise, Vigo Co. Health Department Administrator, said Union Health and other medical facilities originally used reference labs such as LabCorp to run test samples.

“They were using a particular lab that was taking a while to get back results. So, they have been running the samples through the Indiana department of health labs,” she said.

Testing done through LabCorp required a 10 day turnaround period.

According to Wise, the state’s tests cut that in half, allowing facilities to get test results back in three to four days.

“So we’re finding a quicker turnaround so with more people being tested and a quicker turnaround, we’re going to see an uptick in the number of either positives or negatives,” Wise said.

Union Health has been a main testing location in Vigo Co.

“Union Health has tested 265 people. 129 are negative and 19 have been positive. And of those 19 some live in counties besides Vigo county,” she said.

Wise said it’s a waiting game as medical professionals await test results from the state.

“There are individuals at Union Hospital that are hospitalized. And some patients under investigation where their results haven’t came back yet, that are hospitalized. But the hospitals are doing a fantastic job,” Wise said.

The Vigo Co. Health Department is conducting their contact investigation process. Those who may have been in contact with a coronavirus patient, will be notified by the department.
