EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, U.S. 45 will be completely closed starting June 9 for a bridge replacement.

A detour route that will use I-57 will be prepared. Only local traffic will be allowed to use U.S. 45 between County Highway 18 north of Mattoon and Illinois 133 in Arcola.

The construction project is designed to improve the bridge over Flat Branch and just south of Humboldt to have a smoother driving surface. The project is expected to last through November 1.

IDOT asks motorists to use caution when driving in the area as construction will cause changes to the speed limit, road directions, and cause an increase of crews in the area.

The project is a part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program that aims to improve highways, bridges, and other safety features.

For updates on the construction, follow IDOT District 7 on social media, or on their Getting Around Illinois webpage.
