Illinois law changes buying age of nicotine products to 21

Governor JB Pritzer recently signed House Bill 345, also known as the Tobacco 21 Law, which bans people under 21 years of age from tobacco and vaping products, including cigaretes, chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes and vapes.

According to a press release, Illinois is the first Midwestern state to raise the buying age for nicotine products.

In the release, Rep. Camilly Lily is quoted as saying that this bill will “reduce youth tobacco use in the state of Illinois by at least 25% over time”.

The ban will go into effect on July 1.
