IL I-70 traffic slowed due to crash involving cattle hauler, corralling efforts

Effingham, IL - A crash involving a cattle hauler on Interstate 70 in Illinois early Wednesday morning caused traffic delays near milepost 85 as cattle were being corralled.

The accident occurred at approximately 4:15 a.m. Wednesday when the hauler was traveling westbound about three miles east of Altamont. The vehicle left the roadway, entered the median and overturned. 

The left lanes of both east and westbound traffic were closed intermittently while emergency personnel worked to clear the scene.

The driver of the hauler was not injured. 

According to Illinois State Police, 39 cows were on the hauler and nine of them died.
