Our latest Hometown Hero is rare indeed. Mert Wheeler, who lived most of his life in Hymera, served in both World War Two and Korea who is still alive and just celebrated his 100th birthday on June 22nd.
Wheeler, who achieved the rank of Sergeant before his discharge, was in New Dehli, India most of the time in the 2nd World War and spent a long time on a crew that flew supplies over and through the Himalayas to support Chinese Army troops who’s supplies were blocked by the Japanese.
Though not in combat Sgt Wheeler was in danger on every flight where the transport planes had to navigate through the world’s highest mountains without radar and modern equipment.
Mert lost his wife, Mildred, a while back but still has two sons, Jim and Jack. He now resides in a retirement home in Jasonville, one of the true remaining Hometown Heroes.
