TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Law enforcement formed a perimeter at Deming Park in Terre Haute as officers searched overnight Wednesday for a possibly armed suspect. The Terre Haute Police Department asked that people avoid the area and stay in their homes with their doors locked as the search continued.
After not finding the suspect, most officers left the scene by around 6 a.m. Wednesday, but the search continued.
“The guy is armed so it is dangerous,” THPD spokesman Ryan Adamson said. “Let things play out, let us find this individual safely. Then we will see what happens from there.”
Adamson said the incident began when deputies from the West Terre Haute Police Department stopped a suspected impaired driver late Tuesday night.
After deputies took the driver’s license, the driver fled the traffic stop. Stop Sticks were deployed at 1st Street and Ohio Boulevard in Terre Haute. While striking the sticks the driver fired gunshots at the deputies in pursuit, Adamson said.
According to West Terre Haute Police, the vehicle was stolen out of Illinois.
After wrecking the vehicle into the gates of Deming Park, the driver bailed from the vehicle and ran into the park.
A description of the suspect has not been given at this time.
Indiana State Police, Terre Haute Police, West Terre Haute Police, the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, and the city’s Special Response Team were on the scene as well as multiple ambulances as the search continued for the driver.
Law enforcement officers used drones as well as a helicopter supplied by the Indiana State Police to aid in the search.
