Health department reports uptick in new Vigo County coronavirus cases

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A new death was reported in Vigo County Thursday as well as several new coronavirus cases. It brings the total number of cases in Vigo County since the start of the pandemic to more than 150.

Vigo County Health Educator Roni Elder says the county is seeing an uptick in new cases recently.

“What we’re seeing is that the more that people are moving out and about we’re getting more positive cases,” says Elder.

The Vigo County Health Department released a graph Wednesday that shows the number of new cases by week.

35 cases were reported between May 17 and May 23, the highest weekly increase since the pandemic began.

Elder says because there is criteria for getting a test, most of the new cases are people who were symptomatic.

“There are asymptomatic people out there who aren’t getting tested because they dont feel that they need to be. They don’t have any symptoms. So, our number actually doesn’t show how many positives we actually have in our community, just basically the sick ones or those who have come in contact with someone who is sick,” explains Elder.

As places begin to reopen, Elder urges people to be careful by social distancing, washing their hands and wearing a mask in public.
