A group called “Tobacco Free Indiana” is calling on state lawmakers to increase the tax on cigarettes.
They want to raise the tax by $1.50.
“Tobacco Free Indiana” says raising the tax will generate more than 315 million dollars in annual tax revenue. The group also wants to raise the minimum age for buying cigarettes.
Supporters say smoking kills 11,000 Hoosiers every year.
They believe raising the tax will help more than 52,000 people quit smoking.
