Giving On World Blood Donor Day

Wednesday is World Blood Donor Day.

The Indiana Blood Center dedicated the day to public safety personnel throughout the state, as well as officers injured or killed in the line of duty.

In Terre Haute, donors could thank local officers and firefighters.

Terre Haute Police Chief John Plasse was among the local officials giving blood on Wednesday.

He says he’s seen the need for blood donations first hand.

“When I was in Afghanistan, we had donors in regular rotation,” said Chief Plasse. “They had guys getting direct transfusion, hooking into our arm, right into the victim’s arm. Sometimes the injuries are that severe. So, I really believe in it because it saves lives.”

The public is also encouraged to give the gift of life. There’s a big need for blood donations during the summer, as schools are out and many are traveling.
