Investigation continues into deadly fire in Dugger

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A fatal fire claims one life in rural Dugger. It happened Wednesday night when flames engulfed a trailer on State Road 54.

“The Union Fire Department put the fire out. Further investigation revealed that there was a body inside of the trailer,” says Sgt. Matt Ames with Indiana State Police.

Ames says police and the state fire marshal are still investigating the cause of the fire, but believe it was accidental.

“At this time we believe since there was no foul play, depending upon what the autopsy results come back to, we believe it will be a rather quick investigation and we’ll be able to make notification to the family,” says Ames.

Ames says even though the signs point to an accidental fire, the investigation will not be concluded until the coroner has completed her investigation of the body.

Sullivan County Coroner Mary Ann Dudley says she won’t be able to release the name and cause of death until dentals and an autopsy can confirm his identity. Dudley says the entire process usually takes a couple of weeks to a month.

The autopsy is scheduled for Friday at 10 A.M.
