Fire on S. Doberman Street

Firefighters spent Tuesday afternoon battling a barn fire in southern Vigo County.

The fire started just before 1:30 PM off of South Doberman Street, just south of Woodsmall Drive.

Riley Fire Department, Pierson, Honey Creek and Sugar Creek Fire Departments responded to the blaze.

Hay bales and tractor equipment were inside and around the barn.

Firefighters believe the wind and items around the barn contributed to the size of the fire.

“You can see there are tractors and different types of combustibles that could be in there. At this time, to know exactly what’s in there, I couldn’t tell you. There could be other chemicals like pesticides and things like that,” says Josh Sittler, the Battalion Chief of Honey Creek Fire Department.

The homeowners tell NBC 2 News that they had a solar farm on the roof and an electric fence.

The family ruled out a bonfire spreading to the hay bales or barn.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
