Fallen officers, firefighters honored in annual service

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) —  Fallen officers and firefighters within the Terre Haute community were honored Sunday as part of an annual service.

The fallen heroes were honored with a bags and drums procession, a wreath laying, and guest speakers such as Mayor Duke Bennett.

At the end of the service, a roll call was initiated where all lost servicemen were named and a bell rang in their honor.

This event is a yearly opportunity to pay respect to those who gave up their life for their community.

“It’s always important to know your history. If you don’t know your history then obviously the saying goes you’re bound to repeat it not even that it’s important to us to remember these sacrifices that came before us and to honor that and to make sure these folks aren’t forgotten because that sacrifice is probably the greatest gift that someone can give to somebody else is to lay their life down for them,” said Honor Guard member Jeff Mason.
