A well-known organization that tried to highlight and promote downtown Terre Haute is shutting down.
The board of directors voted Thursday with the support of their membership to disband the organization.
So what happens to Downtown Terre Haute Inc’s mission?
At this point, it’s up in the air and citizens are concerned as well.
“I think an organization is really important when you have like a small community,” says Luke Zhang.
The mission of the organization was, in a nutshell, to promote a vibrant downtown neighborhood, geared towards attracting local residents and visitors as well.
It appears, the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce may pick up some of the slack.
David Haynes, President of the Chamber released this statement Friday.
“We are working with Downtown Terre Haute through a path that can continue the work and vision for the downtown community. The chamber board of directors will be taking action on the proposal later this month.”
“I feel like downtown Terre Haute is a little bit dying,” says Zhang.
That thought causes concern for citizens as they hope that Downtown Terre Haute Inc’s purpose doesn’t go by the wayside.
“I feel like if there is an organization trying to build it up then Terre Haute has potential,” says Zhang.
Todd Nation, a member of Terre Haute city council and who was once a member of DTH says there will always be a need for a group that is dedicated to celebrating and preserving downtown.
“What we did through Downtown Terre Haute Inc. was rooted in the idea that downtown is a special place,” says Nation. “It’s a place that has an identity that is unique to Terre Haute. I don’t think any of that has changed with the decisions that are being made to make Downtown Terre Haute Inc., the organization, go away.”
Those in the community just hope another organization will step up to the plate to keep downtown a main focus.
“Definitely for a better society and for a better community and it’s going to benefit everybody,” says Zhang. “I think somebody should step up and not do it for the money, but do it for everybody.”
While the organization is no longer in existence, no decisions by the chamber will be made until later this month.
Downtown Terre Haute Inc. was responsible for the Downtown Block Party. 2016 was the last year for that event.
