Downtown Terre Haute business fire under investigation

News

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Update: North Third Street is once again open following an early morning fire that destroyed a business.

That fire in downtown Terre Haute had prompted the closure of a portion of North 3rd Street around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters were sent to This and That, 1700 N. 3rd Street, where flames had been reported coming through the roof, before 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Authorities closed N. 3rd from Maple to 8th avenues while firefighters used defensive tactics to put out the flames.

“The Battalion Chief made a decision to remove firefighters from the building,” THFD Arson Investigator Norm Loudermilk explained. “As you see it’s very unstable and if any of those bricks or walls fall on you it’s gonna cause injury or death.”

A work crew took down the walls of the building Wednesday morning.

“Now that it’s safe we’re going to bring an engine crew over here and start removing debris from the area where we believe the fire started,” said Loudermilk.

Investigators were scheduled to arrive in the afternoon.
